The Houn' Dawgs made sure they revenged a loss to Cassville from two weeks ago, as they ran away with a first-round Class 4 District 11 game at Republic Saturday 54-22. Aurora now gets the honor of playing the number-one seed and top ranked boy's team in the state in Class 4, Republic, Thursday.
Aurora chose to pack the two-three zone defense in tight to start the game and found serious success throughout the game, allowing just eight points to Cassville in the first quarter and only one free-throw to the Wildcats in the second stanza.
While the Cassville offense was stagnant, the Houn's were able to repeatedly get the ball inside to one of the two Bader brothers. Sophomore Logan scored 10 first-quarter points and senior Garrett added four in the first and four in the second. Logan led all scorers in the game with 21, while Garrett added 14.
The Houn's led Cassville by 13 after one quarter, 21-8, and by 26 at the break, 35-9.
"We were able to do some of the things we wanted to defensively," said Aurora head coach Daniel Cutbirth. "Our defense made plays for our offense."
The second half didn't get any better for Cassville, as they managed just seven third-quarter points, five of those from Noah Hadlow, while Aurora piled on with 13 more, highlighted by seven more for Logan Bader.
A mercy clock dominated the final quarter as both teams emptied their benches and Aurora took the win going away 54-22, and advance to the semi-final round against Republic. With the win, the Houn's improved to 16-10.
"We sometimes play very well," Cutbirth said. "We will have to keep this up against Republic."
Ethan Lowery led Cassville with 10 points. Cassville finishes the season with a 10-16 record.
