Two local rivals traveled to Drury University for an opening round matchup in the Pink and White Lady Classic, but it was Marionville that came away with the win over Aurora to advance to the second round of the holiday tourney, winning 42-33.
Aurora's offense had trouble putting the ball in the basket and Marionville had too many offensive rebounds in the first quarter and that helped the Lady Comets build a 10-4 lead after one period.
Jordan Hall scored the Lady Houn's first four points of the second quarter to keep Aurora close, 12-8, but Marionville stretched the lead to as many as 10 in the quarter. A feisty Aurora defense got the Lady Houn's back to within four at the breat, 22-18.
After cutting the deficit to just two points early in the third quarter, Marionville went on a decisive 8-0 run to stop Aurora's push and, thus, solidfy the third quarter and give the Lady Comets a 32-27 lead after three.
Josie Young of Marionville took over in the fourth, scoring eight of her team's 10 fourth quarter points, and that would give the Lady Comets the win, 42-33.
Hall led Aurora, now 2-8, with 11 points, while Shania Siegrist, Baylee Hilton and Rachel Parker each tallied six.
