There were two memorable numbers from the Monett Lady Cubs game at Aurora Thursday night, 31 and 32. The first number, 31, was the total number of turnovers Monett had in the game, 20 of those in the first half. The second number, 32, was Aurora's run of points beginning late in the first quarter through the entire second quarter. Aurora won its Big 8 Conference opener in fine fashion, 57-15.

The first quarter was played evenly with each team scoring seven points, including a trey at the buzzer by Aurora's Baylee Hilton.

The second quarter is where the trouble began for Monett. The Lady Cubs amassed 20 first-half turnovers and were unable to score any more points until the third quarter of play. Aurora hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter and built a commanding 20-point lead by the half time buzzer, 37-7.

"We had a really slow start," said Aurora head coach Kevin Besch after the win. "Our spark had to come from our bench."

Aurora, now 1-0 in the conference, then outscored Monett 11-5 in the third quarter to make the lead after three quarters 36 points, 48-12.

A running clock in the fourth period limited scoring, as the Lady Houn's put nine more points on the board, while Monett managed just three, to make the final score 57-15.

"Once we got our spark, the whole team responded," said Besch. "That was a good win any time you can overcome a slow start."

Freshman Emily Parker had a game-high 16 points for Aurora, 14 of those coming in the first half. Her older sister, junior Rachel Parker, added 15 for Aurora.
