In a game that featured over 40 total fouls, the Parkview Lady Vikings proved a little stronger and perhaps a little deeper, as they won on the road at Aurora 58-54.
The two teams see-sawed back and forth through the four quarters of action, with the Lady Vikings winnings the first and, most importantly, the fourth quarter. Parkview used a full-court press in the first quarter that forced Aurora into four turnovers and gave the Lady Vikings a 15-8 lead after one.
Aurora then handled the second quarter, outscoring Parkview 22-15 and finding success in running their offense against the physical defense put on by Parkview head coach Keri Nichols' team.
"We try to be physical and confuse our opponent," said Nichols after the win. "We seemed to be a little better at that in the early going and then the last two minutes."
Aurora's first lead came in the final minute of the first half, 29-28. That lead was short-lived, as the two teams went into the halftime locker room tied at 30-30.
The Lady Houn's opened the second half with a plan to get the ball inside. That strategy worked, as Aurora opened the third quarter on an 11-3 run to grab a 41-33 lead. The Aurora lead grew to as many as nine, as Erica Tucker nailed a three-pointer from the right baseline to put Aurora up 44-35, forcing a Parkview timeout. The Lady Houn's were not finished scoring in the third, as they led by 10 at the end of three, 48-38, outscoring the Lady Vikings 18-8 in the quarter.
But it would be the fact that Parkview won the final period and won it convincingly, 20-6. The Lady Vikings used their standout player Aubrey Buckley take over, as she tallied the fourth quarter's first six points and finished with 11 in the fourth.
"We started running our offense the way we are suppose to in the final two minutes," Nichols said. "Before that, I'm not sure what we were running."
Aurora seemed to try to hold onto the ball on the offensive end in order to survive the vicious Parkview comeback, but foul trouble and a couple of mistakes let the Lady Vikings sneak back into the game and into the lead in the final minute. With just 1:44 left in the game, the Lady Vikings reclaimed the lead 55-54 and never looked back. Aurora had one final opportunity, trailing by two with 25 seconds left on the clock and the ball, but one final turnover sealed the win for Parkview, 58-54.
Buckley lead Parkview (3-2) with a game-high 24 points. Junior Tyra Moore added 16, including two treys.
Aurora (4-2) was led by junior Rachel Parker's 12 points, while Baylee Hilton added 11 and Emily Parker had 8.
"I thought we played hard tonight," said Aurora head coach Kevin Besch. "We will learn from this and get better. We like our team and know that we can be successful."
